Epidemic fear: 108 bodies flow down Ganga in 3 months
KANPUR/UNNAO: Scores of human bodies floating in downstream Ganga led to the police visiting the Pariyar Ghat area of Unnao on Tuesday. Locals claimed that more than 108 bodies had accumulated at the spot in the past few months and were being scavenged by stray dogs and birds.
Unnao SDM Saryu Prasad Shukla said, "Locals informed us about bodies decaying at Pariyar Ghat. A probe has been ordered into the matter. As of now, we are conducting the last rites of the bodies."
"There is no reason to fear as these bodies coming from Ganga upstream have been piling up here because of low water level. We are making all necessary arrangements to bury these bodies in pits being dug up by JCBs," said a senior administrative official.
Authorities swung into action soon after Ganga Pradushan Mukti Abhiyaan's national convener Ramji Tripathi sat on a 'dharna' on the banks of Ganga demanding immediate arrangements for disposal of these bodies before Wednesday's Makar-Sankranti festival.
