Women in Syria are being forced to stand in front of tanks and act as human shields before they’re stripped and raped by soldiers. As the conflict drags on, a rape crisis has taken grip of the country, tearing apart countless women’s lives and forcing hundreds of thousands to flee. But for the first time in months, we have a chance to turn things around.
Real peace talks could be just weeks away, and could be the crucial step towards ending this madness. Russia, President Assad’s staunchest supporter, will be sitting down with the UN and the US to find a way to get all sides to put down their weapons and start talking. But negotiations are doomed to fail if the bloodshed is continuing ruthlessly on the ground. US and Russian leaders are planning a peace conference -- let’s call on them to broker a ceasefire to allow for real negotiations, and offer a reprieve to Syria’s women and children.
