A massive tornadic system ripped across the Midwest during overnight hours Sunday, killing at least five people in Oklahoma and leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.
The extremely powerful system, which forecasters had warned about over preceding days, produced more than 100 reported twisters throughout the region by sunrise.
Homes were reduced to rubble in parts of Oklahoma, Iowa and Kansas, and hundreds of thousands of residents were left without power. The system reportedly lost steam as it moved east into Arkansas and Missouri.
Hardest hit was the town of Woodward, Okla., where two small children were among the five who perished, according to the city’s mayor, Roscoe Hill.
